MA RD Health/Fitness Specialist ACSM
Helping individuals improve their quality of life through nutrition, exercise, and stress management is what I love to do! It started when I received my B.S. in Dietetics from Radford University in 1979. As a means to become eligible to sit for the National Registration Exam, I completed my M.A. in Family Life/Nutrition from the University of Northern Iowa in 1983 and became Registered in 1984.
For several years I worked at various jobs as an RD. I learned that practicing just the “nutrition” aspect was not enough to help my clients change their behaviors; that physical activity was very important. So I became a Health/Fitness Specialist through the American College of Sport Medicine in 1994. This way I could help my clients with both eating and exercise. Yet, there was still something missing: the mental/emotional element to behavior change. I then pursued a certification in Stress Management Counseling in 1998. These all lead to deciding my specialty area would be Sport, Cardiovascular, and Wellness Nutrition.
I started my own business in 1993, Welltrition, serving individuals, businesses, and groups. My philosophy is to learn what my client wants through discussion, review of medical conditions (if any), exercise/activity patterns, and general stress levels. From this we work as a team to develop a holistic program tailored to their lifestyle. I work with my clients on changing the core behaviors so they can keep the program for the rest of their life. It is very gratifying to help people change their lives by improving their health and well-being.
In addition to my work, I enjoy cooking, gardening, music, sports, and music. So my specialty is just an extension of my own life.
Now that I have joined Specialty Nutrition and Health, I feel that it is a natural extension of what I already do. I look forward to working with you in the near future!
